Civitella San Paolo

This small town stands at the foot of Mt Soratte on the hills that slope down to the Tiber, in the area that was known as ‘collinense’ in medieval times. For a large part of its history it belonged to the monks of Saint Paul’s outside-the-walls, who drained the area and built the castle and the most important buildings. In 1433 Civitella sent 30 armed foot-soldiers to Bracciano to fight in the army of Pope Eugene IV against Nicolò Fortebraccio. In gratitude the Pope granted the ‘castellum civitellae’ to the condottieri Giorgio and Battista Ridolfini of Narni, and the monks had to pay them 2,000 florins to regain possession fourteen years later.
